Community Health Fairs

One of CIM's community activities are the health fairs we provide to the greater Lansing area.  We are usually involved in about five health fairs a year and we serve from 30-90 people at each health fair.  Some of the locations we've served in the past include the Cristo Rey Community Center (primarily Hispanic population), the Legislative Health Fair (at the State Capitol), the Islamic Cultural Center, the MSUCOM open house, and the Lansing CATA Health Fair.  Health fairs serve three purposes: 1) to help students develop their clinical skills, 2) to expose students to a vast array of populations, and 3) to improve public relations for the college.

During our health fairs, we provide some health counseling regarding risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, encourage smoking prevention and cessation, and refer patients to facilities where they can receive health care and sign up for insurance, if eligible.  Predominantly, students get hands on experience by measuring height, weight, blood pressure, and blood glucose and cholesterol levels.  All of these activities are student run and physician supervised.  The health fairs are a lot of fun, a great way to get volunteer hours (including TOUCH hours), improve your doctor-patient relationship skills, and a good way to remember why you're in medical school!
